Black Panther Has Another Huge Weekend, Passes $1 Billion Worldwide
Black Panther is still on top at the box office. The 18th Marcel Cinematic Universe movie made a further $41.1 million at the US/Canada box office this weekend to secure the No. 1 spot for a fourth straight week. It's been No. 1 since it was released last month.
Black Panther has now pulled in an astonishing $562 million in the US after just 24 days. It's made $516.6 million from international markets, pushing its global haul above $1 billion. Only four other MCU movies have made $1 billion worldwide--The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, and Captain America Civil War. Black Panther becomes the 33rd movie in cinema history to make $1 billion in its lifetime (16 of them have been from Disney), according to Entertainment Weekly.
The No. 2 movie at the domestic box office this weekend was another Disney movie, A Wrinkle in Time, which made an estimated $33.3 million. The movie reportedly cost $150 to make and market, so the first-weekend performance is underwhelming and below some projections. The movie was not universally adored by critics, while moviegoers also did not have the best things to say; it earned a B CinemaScore, which may hurt second-weekend results due to a relatively worse word-of-mouth response (Black Panther netted an A+ CinemaScore).
GameSpot's Michael Rougeau said in his Wrinkle in Time review, "Even fairy tales need to follow some internal logic and rules, and A Wrinkle in Time has none. It's all fluff, zero substance, and a total waste of time."
