What began as a Minecraft-inspired tower defense title has become one of the most popular games in the blossoming battle royale genre.

Before its servers crashed last weekend, Fortnite reached 3.4 million concurrent users, according to Epic Games. As it stands now, the game's transformation has only helped its popularity.
