Pokemon Go Will No Longer Work On Some Older iPhones After Forthcoming Update

Pokemon Go continues to receive new features through regular updates, such as the improved AR mode that rolled out for the game last month. Unfortunately for some players, an upcoming Pokemon Go update will also make it unplayable on some older iPhones. Developer Niantic confirmed that the popular mobile game will soon discontinue support for devices that cannot run the latest version of iOS.

"In an upcoming update to Pokemon Go, we will end support for Apple devices not capable of upgrading to iOS 11, such as iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c models," Niantic wrote in an update on the official Pokemon Go website. "This change is a result of improvements to Pokemon Go that push the application beyond the capabilities of the operating systems on such devices."

According to Niantic, Pokemon Go will stop supporting these older iOS devices beginning February 28. "After that date, Trainers using affected devices may no longer be able to access their Pokemon Go accounts from that device, or use their PokeCoins or other items in their Bags," the developer said. Niantic posted a full list of affected devices on its website. They include:

  • iPhone 5c
  • iPhone 5
  • iPad (4th generation)
  • iPad (3rd generation)
  • iPad Mini (1st generation)
  • iPad 2

The most recent update for Pokemon Go introduced the AR+ mode, while more Gen 3 Pokemon originally from the Ruby and Sapphire versions were added as part of Pokemon Go's recent holiday event. Two of Pokemon Go's region-exclusive Gen 3 monsters, Seviper and Zangoose, recently traded regions. Meanwhile, game's first Gen 3 Legendary Pokemon, Groudon, is still available in Raid Battles at Gyms until January 15.
