Avengers: Infinity War -- Zoe Saldana Talks About Gamora's Story

Avengers: Infinity War squezed a lot of superheroes into 160 minutes, but few had has much screentime as Gamora, who is played by Zoe Saldana. As the movie centered around the machinations of galactic villain Thanos, his adopted daughter had quite a bit to do. Now free to discuss all the film's twists and turns, Saldana has opened up about her role. Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War follow.

In a pivotal scene, Thanos sacrifices his daughter as the one being he truly loves to retrieve the Soul Stone. It serves as the emotional centerpiece of Thanos' villainous journey, even earning a callback scene in the film's last moments. While Infinity War racked up quite a bodycount, Gamora's death seemed particularly final. In an interview with the LA Times, Saldana seems to indicate that she thinks this was Gamora's exit from the franchise.

"I learned very early on. The producers called me and they told me," she said. "And of course there's a shock to your system. I'm so grateful, this run has been amazing, but you're so not even ready for that. But then once some of the things were discussed, I understood that it just makes sense. In order for you to understand the degree of evil that lies within the core of Thanos, you have to circle in on his own children. So I completely understood. I loved being a part of this unforgettable journey."

Asked about saying goodbye to Marvel, Saldana said she suffers some "fear of missing out," but that she appreciated playing a character that served as a great role model for girls and boys. As for the possibility that Gamora will reappear in Avengers 4 next year, Saldana pled ignorance.

"I don't know," she said. "For the sake of the devoted fans out there--we don't want to rob them of an amazing experience. It's all for them that we do what we do and we also protect what we do."

The creative forces behind Infinity War have been persistent in claiming that the deaths presented in the film have real permanence. The writers have claimed the deaths are real, and the Russos implied that any remarkable revivals would come at a great cost. With sequels already confirmed for several major characters who died--including Spider-Man, Black Panther, and the Guardians of the Galaxy--fans have been expecting some way to reverse course. We'll know for sure when Avengers 4 releases on May 3, 2019.
